7 +1 Community Dance in Heraklion, Crete
by “Syndesmos Chorou”, Iraklion Municipal Dance Center and Jam Art company
7-14 September 2013
The Municipal Dance Center of Heraklion, in cooperation with Jam Art company, invite “Syndesmos Chorou” to carry out the choreography workshop “7 +1 Community Dance” from 7 to 14 September in Heraklion, Crete. “Syndesmos Chorou” consists of the renowned Greek contemporary dance groups: Amorphy, Lemurius, Ntalika, Prosxima, Fora, YELP, and Zita. The idea of the workshop was firstly presented with great success at the Kalamata International Dance Festival in 2011 and at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in 2012 & 2013 with the title “9+1”.
The purpose of the “7 +1 Community Dance” workshop is to give participants the opportunity to come together through dance, to experience movement and the creative process, but also to take part in the making of a dance performance. During the seven days of rehearsals participants are divided into four groups and under the instructions of the four choreographers, undertake to create respectively 4 different pieces. On the last day of rehearsals, all participants and choreographers meet on stage and join the pieces they created into one performance. On September 14th the final outcome will be presented as an open to the public performance at a municipal venue soon to be announced.
The workshop is addressed to all ages (8-80+), with or no experience in dance, to those who love movement, and to those who want to experience the making of a dance performance.

What is “Syndesmos Chorou”
In 2010 the contemporary dance companies Amorphy, Lemurius, Fora etc, Dalika and Prosxima decided to join forces, to exchange ideas and resources and to act collectively. In 2013 groups YELP danceco and Zeta-Iris Karajan joined “Syndesmos Chorou”.
“Syndesmos Chorou” brings together groups seeking to explore through practice the collective model in the contemporary Greek dance context. The objectives are to create a sense of community for people of the wider field of dance, to lead collective actions and to offer opportunities for dialogue.
The dance groups have long and lasting experience in the field of contemporary dance and have participated in many international and Greek festivals. A main feature of the groups is their artistic diversity, and therefore their aesthetic direction and choreographic style can differ significantly. However, on an artistic level, what brings them together is the element of research as an integral part of their creative process. Whether they test the limits of physical expressiveness, or experiment with new technological means, or attempt to interpret current social or political issues, they all seek to reflect collectively and to act to expand the art of dance in Greece.
